We had talked about getting married quite a few times throughout the last couple of years. We knew we would get married "someday"-when the time was right. We both didn't broach the subject much after we moved in together, but it was always in the back of our minds.
I was shopping with my mom one day in December and SHE brought up marriage. Her end of the conversation kind of went like this…."When's it going to happen? What's stopping you now? It seems like a perfect time to me. I've got some time and energy on my hands. I'm ready to plan a wedding!" :-) So, she got me and Mike thinking some more and it just seemed time for both of us. We went to a few jewelry stores that very week so Mike could get an "idea" of the kind of ring I liked, so he said. He was being a little passive/vague throughout the ring shopping-to throw me off!. Of course I was hoping we were looking for THE ring (otherwise, that would just be plain cruel, wouldn't it? Toying with a woman's wedding-crazed emotions like that?). So, I found a ring I really liked on Wednesday night, hoping he would go back and get it right away! We didn't really talk about the topic for the next couple of days (although I was going crazy wondering inside!!).
Friday comes and I'm thinking, well maybe he wants to wait a while…who knows with him??? I talked to him on the way home from work, as I often do, and he sounded especially chipper (yes, chipper) and chatty, not at all his usual on-the-phone self. I got home and felt like staying in for the night and not doing much of anything, yet he wanted to go out to dinner even though we had eaten out alot that week. He had to actually talk me into going out to eat that night, which doesn't usually require much persuasion! (Interjection from mike: She almost ruined the whole thing!) He wanted to go to Cosimo and Suzie's (a special little Italian restaurant we like), but his friend, Tony, called and said he was going there that night (so much for Mike's plan-I don't think he wanted to propose in front of his friends). (He almost ruined the whole thing!:-) ) Mike was crushed about not going there; he really wanted their mozzarella-stuffed breadsticks, he said. I couldn't believe he was so down about breadsticks!! So, we decided on Doc Pierce's in Mishawaka. Actually, we took the dog for a walk first before dinner (seemed like a totally normal evening; he wasn't being weird at all). Dinner was very nice. (Yeah, she got a sandwich on our special night.)
After dinner, we went for a drive through downtown South Bend to look at Christmas lights and he mentioned stopping and walking along the East Race, which is something we normally like to do (in warmer weather!). It was freezing outside. We walked a little and I kept trying to get us back to the car because I was so cold. Finally, he stopped me, hugged me, said some very sweet things about me/us, and asked me to marry him. Of course, I said yes! He had the ring ( the one we looked at Wednesday night) in his pocket-so sly! I couldn't believe it!! When I went to look at the ring, his response was, "Don't throw it in the river!" (I thought she was going to throw it into the river.) We just hugged for a while. I was ready to get back in the warm car. I immediately called my mom on my cell phone. Telling her our exciting news made me cry! She was so happy for us! Then, we went to Mike's parents to tell them the news. They were ecstatic too.
We got engaged December 21, 2001. It was the best Christmas present for us and our families. :-)
