The warmer weather the last few days gave Alex and I a chance to ride our bikes. Alex has outgrown his bike seat so this summer we're taking our biking to a new level. We put together our WeeRide Co-Pilot bike trailer and took it for a spin around the neighborhood.
Alex did an excellent job as my "co-pilot." I was a little unsure of how we would take to it. The reviews I've read of this bike on Amazon either mentioned that their kids loved it or were utterly terrified. I'm exagerating a bit but I did read some reviews about kids falling off and not wanting to get back on. Thankfully, we didn't have a spill and I didn't notice any major problems with balance. I could definitely tell when Alex shifted his weight. I think it was mostly when he was trying to get his feet into position to help pedal. The neat part of the bike is that he can help pedal or coast if he's too tired. I'll need all the help I can get when we try to go up some steep hills.
I need to adjust to having Alex behind me though. I'm used to riding with him strapped into the front bike seat. Sitting right in front of me, I could always keep an eye on him. Now his grip on the handle bars and balance are the only thing keeping him from bailing out on me. Also, he says he has a hard time hearing me talk to him so I need to speak louder.
We're looking forward to a fun summer of biking. We do need to get Alex a new bike helmet. He's only 4 but it seems like he's too old for a Sesame Street theme. I think we'll be upgrading to a Spider-Man helmet.
