Lame Instant-Messaging and Saving Money
Mike and I 'IM' each other during the day sometimes.  Today I shared a "thread" with him from
lafayettemoms.com (a local moms forum) about ways that moms try to save money, which is something we're constantly trying to get better about (we've come a long way).  He read through the different comments and this was our exchange afterwards.  It's lame, but I think he's funny.  Back story...apparently Mike reads the local moms forum, which I think is cute.  And there were mentions on this thread about how some of the moms make inexpensive homemade potpies.

mikeATwork: yeah. i've been reading that. We must be behind the times in the pot pie dept.
Amy: what are you talking about? i made it last week
mikeATwork: oh, right. i stand corrected. i thought i saw pot pies mentioned twice in that thread.
mikeATwork: Bunch of pot pie eatin' mothas.

I did make a WW friendly pot pie from scratch last week....it tasted like butt.

We are currently reading the book, America's Cheapest Family.  It's very interesting.  I'll probably share more about it when I'm done reading.  Oh, and I prefer the terms "frugal" or "cost-conscious," but you can call me cheap!

Off the top of my head, here are a few things we do to save money:

Mike currently takes the CityBus to work at least a few times a week.  It saves us a ton on gas money.  It is free for him as a Purdue employee.  In addition, he gets a great calorie-burning walk in on the way to and from the bus stop.  On the days when he takes the bus, I then drive the Saturn, which is much better on gas mileage than the Jeep.

We utilize the library often.  We rarely BUY a book anymore and go to many of the programs they offer.  The library is such a great resource.  Ooh...I've gotta get that book read because I'm sure it's due back soon.

We either shop at Aldi or shop the ads at a regular grocery store.  We typically shop at Meijer, if not at Aldi.  I love their sales/prices and the Meijer brand of products are good.

Mike keeps this house way too cool in the winter/hot in the summer.  I can't stand it, but I know we're saving money.  We definitely have thermostat wars in this house.

We quit subscribing to the newspaper because just about everything can be found on their website.

We have cut back on eating out big time.  It's one of those expenses that you have nothing to show for except for a fatter you-know-what.  We love going out to eat on occasion, but it's much more special now when we do.

When milk or bread are on sale, we buy extra and freeze.  Just pour a little milk off the top before freezing.  Take out and put in the fridge at least a couple of days before you need.  Shake it up each time....you can't taste a difference.

When we rent a movie, we ALWAYS rent from Redbox.  We only rent on nights we know we will watch it and just keep for 1 night.  You cannot beat $1/night (on Mondays only you can get a free movie with a coupon code!).  We will never pay $4 at a Blockbuster or Hollywood video again.  It's so convenient at the McDonald's down the street.

Neighborhood garage sales are fun.  I used to have more luck there for clothes for Alex when he was younger, but not so much anymore.  Otherwise, I try to shop end-of-season sales in the stores and buy for next year.

Don't laugh...but we started washing our sandwich baggies.  We go through those things fast.  Not only is this better for the environment, but also on our wallet, heehee.

I know there's so much more we do, but that's all I've got tonight.  I'll post more once I finish the book.

Another thing we're grappling with...canceling the cable.  Kara, I know this has worked well for your family.  We really need to still research how much we'd be saving and if it would be worth it for us.  It would probably be a shock to our tv-watching systems at first, but I think we'd get used to only having a few channels?!  Aaah!!!

Oh, and we're also in the process of coming up with a much more strict budget, or I should say, A budget, period.  I always hear that creating a budget and sticking to it (limiting yourself to only spend a certain amount/month in various categories is actually MORE financially-freeing than not having anything in place at all.)  I believe it.  We need to come up with something that is strict, yet effective and do-able for us.

So, my whole 5 readers (prove me wrong!), what are some things that you do to save money/cut costs? Please share. We can all improve in this area!

Oh, and Amy Clark, you are exempt from answering this question, as you have an entire website and blog almost entirely dedicated to this topic.  If you have not checked out my friend's site, you need to!  She's brilliant :-)

P.S. Just like has been the case lately, this was just going to be a post about Mike's funny line from "IM"ing today, but has turned into so much more.  I'm looking forward to reading your comments and heeding your financial tips!

Amy - Tue May 20, 2008, 9:44 am

Ha! You are too sweet- thanks for the shout out!! I really appreciate it!

Do you guys have text on your phone? Redbox is now offering coupon codes on Mon & Wed for free rentals so they have it two days now. You can also get them on InsideRedbox.com.

We dropped our cable, but added a two disc Netflix subscription instead so we could movies that the Redbox didn't carry. I will admit it, it was tough at first, but now I have more time to do some reading.

I love reading all of your ideas!! I am so proud of you, my friend!!

Renay - Sat May 17, 2008, 8:15 pm

Very impressive Amy! I also had no idea but I am even more proud to call you FRIEND! I loved this post and may consider doing one too and all the comments it brought-wowsers.

What do I do to help our budget-oh, I know-I refuse real pets to be in our home (like ones who need a vet) thus we have our dirt cheap frogs as very fun and educational "pets".

I will go store to store for a deal (instead of pay $1 or $2 more to shop at only one store.

I let my hubby do a lot of the shopping as he's ore disciplined than me thus we spend less cause I don't go and get stuff not on my list.

We rarely go to the movies and I adore redbox too-now with free weds too!

We were doing our own lawn care but Scotts offered us a deal too good to pass up so I consider this a savings of our time and going to get the lawn care stuff and spending on other stuff we don't need.

We are otherwise complete diyers in the lawn arena.

We usually hand wash our own vehicles (vs going thru a car wash).

We keep the thermostat too high in the summer and too low in the winter-it stinks for us sweaty peeps;-)

When we do order out we try to not order beverages and have our boys split a meal (since they never eat it all anyway).

FUN, fun, fun!

Oh an dwe use vonage and save a bundle on our phone service.

Amy - Sat May 17, 2008, 5:50 pm

Great tips! I will say though that you really should NOT wash out your bags and reuse them. Those bags aren't made to be reused and the plastic will break down and release chemicals into your food. If you want to reuse them for storing screws or something, that's fine, but don't reuse them for your food unless you like eating polymers!

Kendra - Fri May 16, 2008, 11:03 pm

I make my own laundry and dishwasher detergent from natural ingredients. It's helping the planet, and our wallets as well!

Angela - Fri May 16, 2008, 5:13 pm

My mom used to reuse baggies and I thought she was crazy, now I have started doing it occassionally. I love to shop garage sales and often go to thrift stores and occassionally Good Will. I love hunting for a good bargin. I also save my receipts from things bought at the store, if they go on sale within 30 days I go back and get my credit. Almost all stores do this, I got some towels at 20% off and two weeks later they were 30%, so while I was out and about I got my money credited back. I save all my change. Evertime I give money I put the change in my pocket and add it to the bank when I get home. Last year we had over $200 extra when we went to Vegas.

America's Cheapest Family also has a website where tons of people leave ideas on how to save money. I also get lots of tips from the "Living On a Dime" website that also will send you daily emails and recipes.

Raquel - Thu May 15, 2008, 8:32 pm

Yep... been doin' the garage sales.. but Goodwill and Salvation Army as well... the stores up here are really nicely taken care of and I've found several pieces for Sara with the tags still on.... no newspaper here either... tho I miss my crosswords... I'm the opposite on temps... I live with hotter/colder in the daytime so we an be comfy at night... and lots of ceiling fans... I'm looking into a bigger freezer so I can stock on on things... my little onein the garage just isn't cutting it much anymore.... just always feels like when you catch up one place... you get hit in another..LOL.. sigh

Emily - Thu May 15, 2008, 5:46 pm

Hello? You should have taught the financial chapter! We plan out a menu each week. I get fewer hair cuts. I don't go to the mall hardly at all, thus I'm not in style...but I also have not spent $ on clothes I really do not need. I also shop Goodwill for post-pregnancy jeans and shirts, as I knew that I would eventually be back to my old clothes and just needed some in-betweens. We only have basic $15/month TV, though we are considering canceling it, too. We only eat out on gift cards or 3 times per month. I agree that it is more fun now than it was. We use coupons. I think, in general, staying home more makes me less likely to get fast food on the go or give in to impulsive spending. Great tips, Amy! Love it!

Try switching names on your cable account, and tell them to give you the discount pkg for 12 mos. I know here in SB Comcast will allow you to do that as long as there is a new name on the account. Ours is currently in Danyells' name, but when I added the HD service and complained about how terrible it is(meaning they didn't offer some of the same channels as on basic like History, Amc, and a few others) the guy gave me the discount for 12 mos on both TV & cable, and added HBO annd Encore too. We also had a comcast door to door guy at our door recently and he said at the end of 12 mos just put your spouses name on the account to get another 12 mos of discounts. Well I hope this info will help you save money for awhile.

Ok-maybe it hasn't been 6 years?! Being a lurker for 6 years kind of makes me seem like a stalker doesn't it!! I remember checking out the engagement site and that inspired me to have one for our wedding. Since then I have check on and off, but now I am a faithful reader!! Take care and I will comment more often :)

Frances - Thu May 15, 2008, 8:42 am

We keep a budget, and always have! With Drew still a full time undergraduate and me in graduate school part time, we had no choice. We are still driving the vehicles we (individually) bought in 1999 because they are paid for and in good condition. Our budget is built on an excel document that I built so I have it set to graph what percentages we spend in each category. Then, I track it over the course of a year and each January, we sit down and revisit the allowances we have made in each category and make adjustments accordingly. A budget really is very freeing because you have a tangible boundary to stay within.

Charlene - Thu May 15, 2008, 8:09 am

This is my favorite topic! My co-workers laugh at me because I know exactly how much things cost in the grocery store and where to get dairy products for less. Now that it's spring we've started a huge garden so that will help with produce - why does it cost so much to eat healthy? No wonder our society eats junk food - it's cheap. The farmers markets are coming back which saves us tons. Cable - we have the 'lifeline' package through Time Warner. You have to ask for it because they don't advertise and it's $13 a month - but yet you get Oxygen, Spike, WE and NatGeo. We just joined BJ's (like a Sam's club) and buying in bulk on some items really is more affordable. I carpool during the week or ride my bike. Great idea on the baggies! I can't wait to hear your review of the book - I'll have to look for it at our library, which I've just started going to again to save money. I look forward to hearing more ideas!

Amy F. - Thu May 15, 2008, 7:53 am

Danielle,
You have been lurking for 6 years?! Thank you for continuing to come to our site and de-lurking (maybe it's possible you commented one other time?). Maybe so...because I know I have been on your family's site before. Your daughter is beautiful. I'm so envious of the Hawaii-life you're living...it suits you well!

Thank you for commenting!

Mom - Thu May 15, 2008, 7:38 am

As you well know, we've ALWAYS kept the house pretty chilly in the winter and warm in the summer cause I hate paying those NIPSCO bills! We've really cut back on driving (running errands, etc) - except when it comes to seeing our grandsons! We've considered getting rid of the land phones and just using cells, but can't quite do it. Dave's driving his motorcycle to work instead of his gas-guzzling truck. Get rid of cable??? We'd rather shop the Miracle Mile in the buff!!!

Danielle Madaus - Thu May 15, 2008, 2:38 am

I am with you on the garage sales for my daughters clothes! Babies only wear things a few times, they still look brand new! We have also cut back on eating out! Let me know some more ideas when you finish your book! By the way, I have been reading your blog for some time but have never left a comment. I have been reading since your brother told me about your engagement site. Keep up the good work...I love your blog!

Lindsay - Wed May 14, 2008, 10:34 pm

Well, to save money, I married Mike. Sorry, ladies, you may not use that strategy. It is a once and done sort of deal. :)

LOL! We've talked about canceling cable, as well. All of our "addiciton" shows are on the major channels that you get without cable. However, during football season, we would be really hurting without ESPN. And our Saturday mornings (during Ruby's nap) would be ROUGH without the Food Network. Okay, okay, who am I kidding? We are spending WAY too much $$ on cable for those two opportunities to actually use it. Oh well, it's honestly the only area where we waste money.

In all truth, only making $19,000/year really helps you "save" out of pure necessity.

Mari - Wed May 14, 2008, 9:28 pm

I don't know if you count me as one of your five readers, but now that I have found your blog, you can count me in as an avid fan! I love your ideas about ways to save money. I definitely need to take your advice in some of those areas. And we only have basic cable, which is less than $20 a month, but we have the cable internet. I will say that you can watch a bunch of cable shows from the network's internet website a day or two after they air and that may be an alternative to think about.
